Midsummer in Pituffik Space Base
After a long winter of winter darkness, it transitions to the midnight sun. People spend more time outside. They gather for events, where the energy is renewed, and the joy is boosted by the great gatherings.
Greenland's National Day at Pituffik Space Base
For many years, the citizens' board has been responsible for the celebration of Greenland's National Day on the base, in cooperation with the present contractors.
"In recent years, we have seen a greater and greater influx to the event and this year, as in previous years, the number of participants was between 200-300 people, which is fantastic compared to the number of people who are here at Pituffik Space Base. In recent years, there has also been an increase in local hunters who have seen and heard about the event, they have then taken the trip with their family to the base to be part of this, we have welcomed them, and they have made the day even better with their presence. Unfortunately, the ice made it problematic this year and therefore no one from the surrounding settlements came, but of course we hope that next year it will be open so that they can come in here again with the family and be part of the celebration.
This year, as always, we had a flag raising in Dundas town and this attracted a large part of the management from the various units, who all turned up and were welcomed by a Greenlandic employee dressed in her beautiful national costume. There was singing, speeches and a flag-raising, which up here meant that National Day had come and the day would now be marked by Greenland. A fantastic day with brilliant sun, blue skies and many happy, satisfied and not least satisfied employees and residents here at Pituffik Space Base.” – Flemming H. Jensen, Deputy Chairman, Pituffik Citizens' Board
At 17-19 a buffet was served in our Pavilion, the food was prepared and served by Dundas buffet restaurant employees led by the head chef. As always, there was a large selection of Greenlandic provisions, muktuk, redfish, halibut, prawns, reindeer soup, fish soup as well as reindeer club and back. For the adventurous, an opportunity to also taste the boiled kingfishers with feathers and all. For the less adventurous, there was grilled sausage and the opportunity to make your own burger.
Inussuk would like to thank the Citizens' Council for the event and thank the employees who helped on the day.
St. John's Eve at the base
On June 23, Midsummer's Eve was celebrated at Pituffik Space Base. Many turned up for the lighting of the bonfire. The fire consisted of pallets and at the top there was a witch carved out of wood on a broom.
The fire department on the base was present with their large fire truck. This is to ensure that the strict procedures for bonfires were followed, as well as to ensure that the fire was extinguished correctly.
Afterwards, there was fun and Danish bonfire bread for the participants.
"It was really nice and people were so happy" – said an employee
The word of mouth went on the events which people have been looking forward to celebrating. With the great experiences and the pleasant gatherings, the good energy spreads on the base.
Inussuk would like to thank the employees for taking part in the preparation of the events as well as all the participants who showed up.
